## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

WHILE ENROUTE BACK TO THE DEPARTURE AIRPORT, I69, AT AN ALTITUDE OF 6500 FEET THE PILOT EXPERIENCED AN ENGINE ANOMALY. HE NOTED THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE DROPPING TO ZERO. THE ENGINE THEN EXPERIENCED A POWER FAILURE WHICH RESULTED IN SMOKE AND FUMES ENTERING THE COCKPIT. THE PILOT INITIATED AN EMERGENCY LANDING AT CLERMONT COUNTY AIRPORT, I69. UPON LANDING, THE PILOTS VISIBILITY IMPAIRED BY SMOKE AND FUMES, THE AIRCRAFT EXITED THE END OF THE RUNWAY, TRAVELED THROUGH A CHAIN LINK FENCE AND CAME TO REST ON A PUBLIC ROAD. THE PILOT SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. ON SCENE INVESTIGATION NOTED MULTIPLE ENGINE CASE PROTRUSIONS BY INTERNAL ENGINE COMPONENTS. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE WINGS WHEN THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK THE CHAIN LINK FENCE. SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION DETERMINED THE ENGINE OIL COOLER HAD CRACKED ALLOWING THE OIL SYSTEM TO DEPLETE WHICH RESULTED IN A CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN12LA111](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN12LA111), Dec 8, 2011: Curtiss Wright P40M (N5813), Batavia, OH, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power due to failure of the engine oil cooler and subsequent oil starvation to the engine.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
