## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

1/3/2012 - AS THE AIRCRAFT CLIMBED THROUGH 4,000 FEET, THE FLIGHT CREW OBSERVED SMOKE AND A FLAME COMING FROM BEHIND THE CAPTAIN'S SEAT. THE CREW OBSERVED A FLAME FOR APPROXIMATELY 6-10 SECONDS COMING FROM THE AC CROSS TIE LOCK OUT PANEL. THE CAPTAIN AND FIRST OFFICER DONNED THEIR OXYGEN MASKS, INITIATED A RETURN TO BWI, AND DECLARED AN EMERGENCY. THE FLIGHT CREW COMMUNICATED WITH THE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS AND WERE INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NO SMOKE IN THE CABIN OF THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED IN BWI WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. AFTER LANDING THE FLIGHT CREW OPENED THE COCKPIT WINDOWS AND THE SMOKE DISSIPATED. THE AIRCRAFT TAXIED TO THE GATE AND THE PASSENGERS WERE DEPLANED WITHOUT INCIDENT.AIRPORT RESCUE AND FIRE FIGHTING PERSONNEL RESPONDED TO THE AIRCRAFT WHEN IT LANDED, AND ESCORTED IT TO THE GATE.MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL OBSERVED THE RIGHT AUXILIARY PUMP CIRCUIT BREAKER POPPED AND OBSERVED THREE RELAYS AND A WIRING BUNDLE CHARRED ON THE INSIDE OF THE PANEL.ON DECEMBER 27, 2012, DELTA FILED A REPORT OF THE INCIDENT WITH THE NTSB AS REQUIRED BY NTSB 830.5.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
