## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON FEBRUARY 19, 2012, AT APPROXIMATELY 1320 CST, A BD-4 (EXPERIMENTAL AMATEUR-BUILT) CRASHED ABOUT 1.5 MILES SOUTHWEST OF THE CLARINDA IOWA AIRPORT (ICL). ACCORDING TO A WITNESS, THE AIRCRAFT WAS HEADING SOUTHWEST AND MADE A 180 DEGREE TURN TOWARD THE AIRPORT AND APPEARED TO BE HEADING STRAIGHT TOWARD THE GROUND. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST IN AN OPEN FIELD, AND WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED. DUE TO IMPACT FORCES, BOTH WINGS SEPARATED AND WERE LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 60 YARDS NORTHEAST OF THE MAIN WRECKAGE. THE PROPELLER WAS BURIED IN THE GROUND, AND ONLY THE TAIL WAS STILL INTACT. NO MECHANICAL ISSUES WERE DISCOVERED DURING THE INVESTIGATION. THE PILOT WAS THE ONLY OCCUPANT OF THE AIRCRAFT, AND HE WAS FATALLY INJURED IN THE MISHAP.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN12LA167](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN12LA167), Feb 19, 2012: Crain Jac A BD-4 (N215BD), Clarinda, IA, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: A loss of airplane control for reasons that could not be determined because postaccident examination of the airplane and engine did not reveal any anomalies that would have precluded normal operation.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
