## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ATP PILOT / OWNER WITH CURRENT TYPE RATINGS IN HEAVY BOEING AIRCRAFT WAS IN PROCESS OF RECEIVING INITIAL DUAL INSTRUCTION AND CHECKOUT FROM CFI/DPE WITH EXTENSIVE TAILWHEEL EXPERIENCE FOR THIS RECENTLY PURCHASED VINTAGE AIRPLANE AT THE REDMOND AIRPORT. ON SIXTH OR SEVENTH PRACTICE LANDING AS PIC WITH CFI/DPE IN COPILOT SEAT, PIC REPORTED HE BEGAN TO LOSE DIRECTIONAL CONTROL WITH RUDDERS ON ROLLOUT, AND APPLIED BRAKES WITH EXCESSIVE FORCE, CAUSING AIRCRAFT TO FLIP OVER ON ITS BACK IN CENTER OF RUNWAY 22. DAMAGE TO AIRCRAFT WAS SUBSTANTIAL. WINDS WERE LIGHT AND VARIABLE, WEATHER CLEAR, AND RUNWAY DRY.OWNER HAD NO PREVIOUS TIME IN THIS MAKE AND MODEL PRIOR TO THIS FLIGHT, AND RECEIVED INITIAL TAIL WHEEL ENDORSEMENT IN DECEMBER 2011. TOTAL TAIL WHEEL TIME AS PIC WAS ABOUT 11 HOURS AT TIME OF ACCIDENT.MITIGATING FACTOR IN THIS ACCIDENT IS THAT A CESSNA 310 BRAKE SYSTEM WAS INSTALLED IN THIS AIRCRAFT DURING A RECENT REBUILD UNDER FSDO FIELD APPROVAL.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR12CA158](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR12CA158), Apr 6, 2012: Fairchild 24 C8C (N14722), Redmond, OR, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s loss of airplane control as a result of excessive brake application. Contributing to the accident was the pilot’s lack of experience in the airplane.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
