## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT ATTEMPTED TO TAKE OFF FROM RUNWAY 21 AT KSBM. SOUTHEAST WINDS GUSTING TO 18 KTS EXISTED AT THE TIME OF DEPARTURE. DUE TO INCORRECT CROSSWIND CORRECTION BY THE PILOT, DIRECTIONAL CONTROL WAS LOST. WHEN IT BECAME CLEAR THAT HE WAS GOING TO DEPART THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO ABORT THE TAKEOFF. TRACKS FROM THE LANDING GEAR INDICATE THE AIRCRAFT TRAVELLED APPROXIMATELY 1800' BEFORE COMING TO REST IN A DEEP DITCH OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. MINIMAL DAMAGE TO THE PROPELLER IINDICATES THAT THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING AT THE TIME OF IMPACT, BUT AT A LOW POWER SETTING. THE PILOT AND THREE PASSENGERS DID NOT SUFFER ANY INJURIES, AND THE AIRCRAFT SUFFERED SUBSTATIAL DAMAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
