## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT DEPARTED UPHILL ON RUNWAY 01 WITH GUSTY HIGH TAILWIND CONDITIONS AND THUNDERSTORMS IN THE VICINITY. THE AIRCRAFT CLIMBED TO TREE LEVEL AND THEN THE PILOT LOST CONTROL AND CRASHED NOSE DOWN TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT CAUGHT FIRE AND WAS DESTROYED. THE PASSENGER, IN THE BACK SEAT, ESCAPED WITH MINOR INJURIES. THE PILOT DIED IN THE CRASH.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR12FA280](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR12FA280), Jun 28, 2012: Aviat A-1C-180 (N63WY), Kooskia, ID, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's decision to attempt a takeoff with a gusty tailwind, which resulted in his loss of airplane control during the initial climb and an aerodynamic stall/spin.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
