## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

CONDITION:CALM WATER AND LIGHT WIND. PILOT PLANNED TO START THE TAKE-OFF RUN OPPOSITE THE DIRECTION HE INTENDED TO TAKE OFF, DO A STEP TURN TO THE LEFT TO THE INTENDED DEPARTURE DIRECTION AND TAKE OFF. IN THE STEP TURN THE RATE OF TURN INCREASED TO MORE THAN WHAT THE PILOT ANTICIPATED. THE PILOT LOST CONTROL AS THE TURN TIGHTENED, RESULTING IN AN EXCESSIVE CAPSIZING TENDENCY OF THE AIRCRAFT, CAUSING THE RIGHT WING TO CONTACT THE WATER RESULTING IN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT WING.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC12CA060](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC12CA060), Jul 2, 2012: Dehavilland Beaver DHC-2 (N1018A), Ketchikan, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during a step turn on floats.
