## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING INSTRUCTIONAL NIGHT FLIGHT STUDENT WAS CONDUCTING A SIMULATED ENGINE FAILURE AFTER TAKE-OFF AT 600 FEET AGL. FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR REDUCED THROTTLE ON ONE ENGINE (UNSPECIFIED) AND INSTRUCTED STUDENT TO RETURN FOR LANDING IN NORMAL TRAFFIC PATTERN AT GFK MUNICIPAL AIRPORT. DURING SUBSEQUENT GEAR-UP LANDING BOTH PILOTS INDICATED THEY WERE DISTRACTED BY THE SIMULATED ENGINE FAILURE AND FAILED TO COMPLETE THE BEFORE LANDING CHECKLIST.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN12LA444](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN12LA444), Jul 15, 2012: Piper PA-44-180 (N580ND), Grand Forks, ND, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot receiving instruction's failure to extend the landing gear and the flight instructor's failure to adequately monitor his student's actions during the approach.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
