## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

WHILE CLIMBING OUT AFTER DEPARTURE, THE PIC SAID HE EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER. THE ENGINE DID NOT QUIT COMPLETELY, BUT LOSS ENOUGH POWER THAT THE AIRCRAFT COULD NOT CONTINUE TO CLIMB. BECAUSE OF THE WOODED AREA SURROUNDING THE AIRPORT, THE PIC SAID HIS ONLY OPTION WAS A FIELD AHEAD AND TO HIS RIGHT. SINCE HE HAD SOME ALTITUDE TO DISSIPATE, HE ENTERED A DOWNWIND, SHORT BASE AND FINAL, LANDING IN THE FIELD WITH A DOWNWARD SLOPE. THE PIC SAID HE COULD NOT STOP THE AIRCRAFT IN TIME FROM HITTING A FENCE DUE TO THE DOWNWARD SLOPE OF THE TERRAIN. THE OUTER PORTION OF THE RIGHT WING HIT A FENCE POST CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THE NOSE AND LEFT GEAR COLLAPSED AS A RESULT OF HITTING A DITCH IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE FENCE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR12LA329](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR12LA329), Jul 28, 2012: Interplane Skyboy EX (N582YB), Sandy, OR, substantial damage. Probable cause: A partial loss of engine power during takeoff due to carburetor icing. Contributing to the accident was the lack of a carburetor heat system installed on the airplane.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
