## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 8/19/012 AIRCRAFT N942EJ DEPARTED RUNWAY 36, COTTONWOOD AIRPORT. SHORTLY AFTER LIFTOFF, THE PIC HEARD A BANG WITH A SUBSEQUENT LOSS OF ENGINE POWER. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED IN FIELD APPROXIMATELY 800 FEET FROM THE DEPARTURE END OF THE RUNWAY. WINNEBAGO COUNTY SHERIFF POLICE WERE ON SCENE AND NOTICED THE NUMBER 2 CYLINDER AFT SPARK PLUG WAS NOT INSTALLED INTO CYLINDER. THE PILOT ACKNOWLEDGED TO THE POLICE AND FAA THAT HE REMOVED/REPLACED THE SPARK PLUGS PRIOR TO FLIGHT AND COULD NOT REMEMBER PROPERLY INSTALLING THE LAST SPARK PLUG, CAUSING THE REASON FOR ENGINE POWER LOSS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN12LA577](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN12LA577), Aug 19, 2012: Jones Kitfox III (N942EJ), Rockford, IL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's improper installation of a spark plug, which led to a partial loss of engine power after takeoff and the resultant forced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
