## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON SATURDAY AUGUST 25TH AT ABOUT 11:00 MDT A CESSNA 140 WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT NEAR KSPF AIRPORT. AFTER A CROSS COUNTRY SOLO, THE PILOT WENT THROUGH THE LANDING CHECKLIST. THE PILOT TURNED DOWNWIND AT KSPF AND APPLIED CARB HEAT RESULTING IN THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY DROPPING BELOW 1000 RPM. THE PILOT BEGAN EMERGENCY PROCEDURES, INCLUDING ADJUSTING THE CARB HEAT. THE PILOT MADE A FORCED LANDING IN A FIELD HITTING A BARBED WIRE FENCE, THE WHEELS CONTACTING THE UPPER WIRE CAUSING THE AIRPLANE TO PITCH DOWNWARD RAPIDLY. THE LANDING GEAR CONTACTED A SMALL RISE IN THE TERRAIN CAUSING THE AIRPLANE TO NOSE OVER WITH THE FRONT OF THE AIRPLANE CONTACTING THE GROUND. THE AIRPLANE THEN FLIPPED OVER WITH THE VERTICAL STABILIZER/RUDDER ASSEMBLY CONTACTING THE GROUND. THE PILOT WAS UNINJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN12LA580](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN12LA580), Aug 25, 2012: Cessna 140 (N140XX), Spearfish, SD, substantial damage. Probable cause: The partial loss of engine power due to debris lodged beneath the throttle body of the carburetor venturi.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
