## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

A QUAD CITY ULTRALIGHTS CHALLENGER II, REGISTERED TO AND OPERATED BY A PRIVATE INDIVIDUAL, CRASHED IN A FIELD SURROUNDED BY TREES NEAR OCALA, FLORIDA. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AT THE TIME AND NO FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED FOR THE 14 CODE OF FEDERAL REGULATIONS (CFR) PART 91 PERSONAL FLIGHT FROM MORRISTON, FLORIDA, TO LEEWARD AIR RANCH AIRPORT (FD04), OCALA/BELLEVIEW, FLORIDA. THE AIRPLANE SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE, AND THE PRIVATE PILOT AND ONE PASSENGER WERE FATALLY INJURED. THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED FROM MORRISTON, FLORIDA, ABOUT 7 MINUTES EARLIER.THERE WERE NO KNOWN WITNESSES TO THE ACCIDENT. INSPECTION OF THE ACCIDENT SITE REVEALED A DEBRIS PATH OF AIRPLANE PARTS ORIENTED ON A SOUTHEASTERLY HEADING, CONSISTENT WITH A FLIGHT TOWARDS THE DESTINATION AIRPORT. THE MAIN WRECKAGE CAME TO REST NEARLY INVERTED IN A FIELD WITH A 3 FOOT SECTION OF THE RIGHT WING SEPARATED; THE SEPARATED RIGHT WING PIECE WAS LOCATED ABOUT 370 FEET FROM THE RESTING SPOT OF THE MAIN WRECKAGE. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF TREE CONTACT ON THE LEADING EDGE OF THE RIGHT WING, NOR ON ANY OF THE OBSERVED COMPONENTS. THE WRECKAGE WAS RECOVERED FOR FURTHER EXAMINATION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA12LA537](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA12LA537), Aug 30, 2012: Quad City Ultralights Challenger II (N2481P), Ocala, FL, substantial damage, 2 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's inadvertent overstress of the airplane, which resulted in the in-flight separation of the outer section of the right wing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
