## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE COMMERCIAL RATED PILOT TOOK OFF FROM LAKE CHELAN AIRPORT (S10) DURING A PERSONAL PLEASURE FLIGHT AND CLIMBED TO 4,500 FEET. AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES, HE DECIDED TO CLIMB TO 8,000 FEET TO CLEAR THE MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN AND FLY OVER LAKE CHELAN. THE PILOT REPORTED INITIATING THE CLIMB AT 1,200 FEET PER MINUTE, INCLUDING A 15 DEGREE BANK TO THE LEFT, AND AT 5,000 FEET, THE AIRCRAFT'S ENGINE SUDDENLY LOST POWER. THE PILOT ESTABLISHED AN ENGINE OUT GLIDE SPEED, ISSUED A MAYDAY RADIO CALL, AND NAVIGATED THE SAFEST PLACE TO LAND. THE PILOT MADE A DECISION TO LAND GEAR UP ONTO A ROAD. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED ON THE ROAD, SKIDDED, IMPACTED A STREET SIGN WITH ITS RIGHT WING AND CAME TO REST NEXT TO A BUILDING. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THERE WAS NO POST FIRE AND THE PILOT WAS NOT INJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR12LA382](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR12LA382), Aug 31, 2012: Mooney M20J (N132PC), Chelan, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power during climb for reasons that could not be determined because postaccident examination did not reveal any anomalies that would have precluded normal operation.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
