## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING AN INSTRUCTIONAL FLIGHT, STUDENT PILOT WAS PRACTICING HOVERING OVER A GRASS/DIRT FIELD WHEN HE BEGAN TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE HOVER. WITH THE HELICOPTER DRIFTING RIGHT AND PITCHING FORWARD IT STRUCK THE GROUND WITH THE SKID, CAUSING THE HELICOPTER TO ROLLOVER. DUE TO THE LOW HEIGHT OF THE HOVER, THE INSTRUCTOR WAS UNABLE TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE HELICOPTER, PREVENTING THE ACCIDENT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR12CA405](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR12CA405), Sep 7, 2012: Robinson Helicopter R22 Beta (N212SH), Lake Newman, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The flight instructor's failure to maintain clearance from terrain while correcting for the student pilot's failure to maintain directional control of the helicopter.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
