## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

MR ODEGAARD WAS PRACTICING FOR THE WINGS AND WHEELS AIR SHOW TO BE HELD ON SEPT 8, 2012 AT BARNES COUNTY AIRPORT, VALLEY CITY ND. HE HAD COMPLETED SEVERAL MANUEVERS INCLUDING AN IMMELMANN, HALF CUBAN EIGHT AND 4 POINT ROLL. HE HAD MADE A WIDE TURN AND WAS RETURNING TO THE FIELD HEADING EAST WHEN HE INTIATED A BARREL ROLL. AT THE TOP OF THE ROLL AIRCRAFT HAD A SLIGHT NOSE DOWN ATITUDE AND AS IT WAS COMING AROUND CONTRAILS WERE VISIBLE FROM THE WING TIPS, IT WAS ALSO NOTED BY WITNESSES THAT THE AIRCRAFT SEEMED TO BE SHAKING. THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK THE GND IN A SLIGHT NOSE DOWN ATITUDE HEADED IN A SOUTHERLY DIRECTION. AIRCRAFT WAS DESTOYED ON IMPACT AND THE PILOT WAS DECEASED AT THE SCENE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN12LA615](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN12LA615), Sep 7, 2012: Goodyear F2G (N5577N), Valley City, ND, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot’s decision to initiate the aerobatic maneuver at an altitude that did not allow for full recovery of the airplane before ground impact.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
