## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE AIRCRAFT WAS ENTERING THE SPORT CLASS RACE COURSE AT THE RENO AIR RACES WHEN IT EXPERIENCED A VIBRATION IN THE TAIL. THE PILOT DECLARED A "MAYDAY," EXITED THE COURSE AND LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. THE ELEVATOR TRIM TAB FITTING WAS DETACHED FROM THE TRIM ROD AND FROM CONTROL SURFACE. THE ELEVATOR STRUCTURE HAD RECEIVED SUBSTATIAL DAMAGE FROM THE SUSPECTED FLUTTER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR12FA421](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR12FA421), Sep 14, 2012: Frederick F 1 (N158CF), Reno, NV, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s operation of the airplane above the established never-exceed speed and the incorrect installation of the trim tab control horn, which resulted in the flutter of the left elevator trim tab.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
