## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT FLEW THROUGH A COLUMN OF SMOKE FROM A FOREST FIRE THAT HE WAS WORKING FOR THE U.S. FOREST SERVICE. HE ENCOUNTERED SEVERAL SEVERE BUMPS OF TURBULENCE. HE HIT HIS HEAD ON THE CEILING OF THE AIRCRAFT THAT CAUSED A SMALL CUT. AFTER HE ENCOUNTERED THE TURBULENCE THE PILOT NOTICED THAT HE HAD TO HOLD THE CONTROL YOKE WITH ABOUT 30 DEGREES OF RIGHT AILERON TO MAINTAIN LEVEL FLIGHT. HE RETURNED TO THE ELLENSBURG WASHINGTON AIRPORT AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. AFTER THE FLIGHT IT WAS DISCOVERED THE LEFT AILERON CONNECTING ROD HAD FAILED.
