## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT PLANED A SHORT DVFR FLIGHT FROM SLC TO TVY. SHORTLY AFTER DEPARTURE FROM SLC AT APPROXIMATELY 10 WEST OF SLC AND AT ABOUT 5,500 MSL (1,300 AGL) HE EXPERIENCED WHAT HE PERCEIVED AS SEVER ENGINE VIBRATIONS. HE SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE AND LANDED UNEVENTFULLY ON A DRY MUD FLAT AREA ON THE SOUTH SHORE OF THE GREAT SALT LAKE. AFTER LANDING HE NOTED A LARGE OUTBOARD SECTION OF ONE OF THE WOODEN PROPS APPEARED TO HAVE DELAMINATED. THIS SEVER UNBALANCED CONDITION LIKELY CAUSED THE ENGINE VIBRATIONS. ALSO, IT WAS NOTED DURING THE INCIDENT INVESTIGATION THE METAL PROP SPINNER WAS MISSING. IT IS VERY POSSIBLE THE SPINNER RETAINING NUT OR BOLT FAILED AND ALLOWED THE SPINNER TO DEPART AND IF IT STRUCK THE PROP THAT COULD CAUSE THE DELAMINATION AND PROP FAILURE.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
