## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AT APPROX 1530 ON 12/23/12, A CE-172P, N5404K, S/N 17274096, REPORTED A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER AT 1500 FT MSL WHILE CONDUCTING AERIAL SURVEY OF HURRICANE SANDY RAVAGED AREAS WHILE IN STRAIGHT AND LEVEL CRUISE FLIGHT. AN EMERGENCY WAS DECLARED WITH MCGUIRE APPROACH CONTROL, AND AFTER REGAINING POWER THEN SUBSEQUENTLY LOSING POWER AGAIN, LANDED ON THE BEACH WITH THE MAIN GEARS IMPACTING THE SAND AND THE NOSE WHEEL OFF THE GROUND. DURING ROLLOUT, THE LEFT MAIN GEAR STRUCK A CINDER BLOCK, WHICH CAUSED THE NOSE GEAR TO COME DOWN PREMATURELY, AND ULTIMATELY IMPACTED THE SAND, CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO FLIP ON ITS BACK. A SUBSEQUENT INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT DID NOT REVEAL A REASON FOR THE LOST POWER.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
