## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

FOLLOWING DEPARTURE FROM THE EASTERN IOWA AIRPORT, CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA, THE CAPTAIN NOTICED AN INTERMITTENT SMELL AND ASSUMED IT TO BE DEICE FLUID. WHILE CLIMBING THROUGH 12,000 FEET, THE ODOR BECAME STRONGER AND WAS SOON FOLLOWED BY A "BAGGAGE SMOKE WARNING" INDICATION. THE CAPTAIN CONTACTED THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT WHO ALSO REPORTED A STRONG SMELL OF SMOKE IN THE CABIN, BUT STATED THERE WAS NO VISIBLE SIGN OF SMOKE. THE CAPTAIN INSTRUCTED THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT TO DON HER OXYGEN MASK, AT WHICH TIME SHE DONNED HERS AND DEPLOYED THE PASSENGER MASKS AS WELL. THE BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT FIRE EXTINGUISHERS WERE DISCHARGED, THE PILOT DECLARED AN EMERGENCY AND RETURNED TO THE CEDAR RAPIDS AIRPORT. UPON LANDING, THE SMELL OF SMOKE WAS STILL PRESENT SO THE EVACUATION ORDER WAS GIVEN BY THE CAPTAIN. ALL PASSENGERS WERE EVACUATED THROUGH THE MAIN CABIN DOOR AND WAS ACCOMPLISHED IN LESS THAN 30 SECONDS, AS REPORTED BY THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT. THERE WERE NO INJURIES REPORTED, OR FAILURE OF EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT. ALL PASSENGERS WERE SUBSEQUENTLY BUSSED TO THE TERMINAL.
