## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

N35SD DEPARTED IMPERIAL, CALIFORNIA AT APPROXIMATELY 2215 UTC ON JANUARY 6, 2013, DESTINED FOR FRESNO, CA (KFAT.) THE AIRCRAFT CLIMBED TO 16, 500 DUE TO HIS REPORT OF GOOD UPDRAFTS AND REMAINED THERE UNTIL HE REQUESTED AN IFR CLEARANCE WITH LOS ANGELES ARTCC AT 2349 UTC. THE PILOT WAS CLEARED TO MAINTAIN 14000 FEET ON THE IFR CLEARANCE. THE PILOT REQUESTED A DESCENT TO CROSS TULE VOR (TTE) AT 9000. DUE TO A HIGHER MINIMUM VECTOR ALTITUDE N35SD WAS TOLD TO MAINTAIN 14,000 FEET AND CONTACT BAKERFIELD APPROACH CONTROL FOR A LOWER ALTITUDE. N35SD WAS TRANSFERED TO BAKERSFIELD APPROACH AT 0000 UTC. THE PILOT REPORTED ON FREQUENCY 12 SECONDS LATER AND WAS ISSUED A DESCENT TO 7000 FEET BY BAKERSFIELD APPROACH. THE PILOT ACKNOWLDEGED THE DESCENT AND CONTACT WAS LOST FIRST BY VOICE AND LATER, RADAR. THE WRECKAGE WAS LOCATED ABOUT 1 MILE FROM THE LAST RADAR RETURN. NO UNUSUAL VERBAL COMMUNICATION WAS RECEIVED FROM N35SD. A LEAR JET AND A KING AIR REPORTED SEVERAL MILES AHEAD THAT THEY WERE NOT PICKING UP ICE EVEN THOUGH THE CONDITIONS WERE CONDUCIVE FOR ICING. THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A WEATHER PATTERN IN THE AREA CONDUCIVE TO ICING AND TURBULENCE.
