## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AIRMAN ENCOUNTERED A COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE, DECLARED AN EMERGENCY WITH JUNEAU FLIGHT SERVICE STATION AND MADE A SUCCESSFUL, OFF AIRPORT, FORCED LANDING.

THE AIRMAN WAS ENROUTE FROM WASHINGTON STATE TO ANCHORAGE, ALASKA. THE AIRMAN HAD JUST FUELED UP AND ADDED A ROUTINE QUART OF OIL IN YAKUTAT, ALASKA AND RESUMED THE FLIGHT TOWARD ANCHORAGE. ABOUT 30 MILES EAST OF CAPE YAGATAGA, THE AIRMAN WITNESSED OIL SEEPING FROM THE ENGINE COWL. THE AIRMAN IMMEDIATELY STARTED A CRUISE CLIMB AND CONTACTED JUNEAU FLIGHT SERVICE STATION TO DECLARE AN EMERGENCY AND SEEK ASSISTANCE IN CURRENT WEATHER DATA AT NEAR-BY AIRPORTS. JUNEAU FLIGHT SERVICE STATION AND THE AIRMAN DETERMINED THE NEAREST SUITABLE LANDING SPOT. A FEW MINUTES LATER, THE AIRMAN SAW SMOKE COMING FROM THE COWL, NOTIFIED JUNEAU FLIGHT SERVICE STATION THAT HE WAS GOING TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING ON THE SNOW FIELD BELOW. THE AIRMAN RECALLS THE SMOKE GOT THICKER; HE SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN AND MADE A SUCCESSFUL EMERGENCY LANDING ON A HARD PACKED SNOW PORTION OF THE BERING GLACIER. THE AIRMAN WAS NOT INJURED AND THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
