## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PRIVATE PILOT STATED HE LANDED LONG TO AVOID DEER ON THE MOOSE CREEK, IDAHO RANGER STATION RUNWAY 040. THIS IS A 2900 FOOT GRASS RUNWAY LANDING UPHILL. THE PILOT AND SOLE OCCUPANT SAID THERE WAS A SLIGHT TAIL-WIND AT THE TIME OF THE LANDING. AFTER TOUCH-DOWN HE THEN LOST CONTROL OF THE TAIL-WHEEL EQUIPPED AIRPLANE AND GROUND LOOPED. THE AIRPLANE CAME TO REST OFF THE WEST SIDE OF THE RUNWAY UPSIDE DOWN.

DAMAGE INCLUDED BENT STRUTS, PROP, RUDDER, AND FIREWALL. AN FAA INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE AIRPLANE HAD NOT BEEN ANNUALED SINCE 2004 AND THE PILOT'S LAST FAA MEDICAL WAS IN 2002. THE PILOT LOGBOOK DEPICTED A FLIGHT REVIEW IN AUGUST 1995.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR13CA192](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR13CA192), Apr 9, 2013: Piper PA-22-150 (N3505P), Moose Creek Ranger Station, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's use of excessive braking after landing with a tailwind and after an extended touchdown to avoid deer on the runway.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
