## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT HAD JUST BOUGHT A NEW AIRCRAFT, WHICH WAS REGISTERED IN THE LIGHT SPORT CATEGORY. THE PILOT DID NOT HOLD A SPORT PILOT CERTIFICATE; HOWEVER HE DID OWN AND HAD A NUMBER OF HOURS IN A PART 103 AIRCRAFT.

THE PART 103 AIRCRAFT THE PILOT OWNED AND HAD HIS MOST RECENT EXPERIENCE IN WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE ACCIDENT AIRCRAFT, IN THAT IT ONLY HAD TWO DIFFERENT CONTROL INPUTS. THESE WERE THE RUDDER AND THE ELEVATOR. BOTH OF THESE WERE CONTROLLED BY A CONTROL STICK.

THE ACCIDENT AIRCRAFT HAD A TRADITIONAL LAYOUT, WHERE THE RUDDER WAS CONTROLLED BY RUDDER PEDALS AND THE ELEVATOR AND AILERONS WERE CONTROLLED BY A STICK.

THE PILOT RECEIVED NO FORMAL TRAINING AND LESS THAN ONE HOUR OF FLIGHT TIME IN A SIMILAR TYPE OF AIRCRAFT, FROM A FRIEND, BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO FLY HIS NEW AIRCRAFT.

AFTER TAKE OFF, THE PILOT INPUTTED FULL AILERON AND RUDDER, CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO ENTER A SPIN.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN13LA227](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN13LA227), Apr 14, 2013: Quad City Ultralight Acft Challenger I (N171DP), Winnie, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: The noncertificated pilot’s failure to maintain airplane control during takeoff due to his fixation on the instrument panel.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
