## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT HAD BEEN PRACTICING INSTRUMENT APPROACHES AT KFBL AND KOWA WITH A SAFETY PILOT IN THE RIGHT SEAT OF THE AIRCRAFT. WHILE NEARING KOWA ON ONE OF THE APPROACHES A DECISION WAS MADE TO LAND AT KOWA. THE SAFETY PILOT TOOK CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT WHILE THE PILOT MADE THE PREPARATIONS FOR LANDING. WHILE ON BASE LEG FOR RUNWAY 12 AT KOWA, THE PILOT TOOK BACK THE CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT. THE PILOT STATED THAT THEY WERE ON A HIGH FINAL FOR RUNWAY 12. THE APPROACH WAS CONTINUED AND THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN ON THE LEFT SIDE OF RUNWAY 12. THE PILOT DECIDED TO INITIATE A GO-AROUND AND APPLIED FULL POWER. THE AIRCRAFT MADE A TURN TO THE LEFT, CROSSED THE TAXIWAY AND CAME TO REST IN THE GRASS BEYOND THE TAXIWAY. THE LEFT WING OF THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THE NOSE GEAR STRUT AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY SEPARATED FROM THE AIRCRAFT AFTER IT CROSSED THE TAXIWAY AND THE AIRCRAFT STOPPED IN A NOSE DOWN ATTITUDE WITH SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE MOUNT AND FIREWALL AREA.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN13CA247](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN13CA247), Apr 27, 2013: Piper PA-28-180 (N7780N), Owatonna, MN, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s loss of directional control during an aborted landing.

## Other reports on N7780N (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19800822082749I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19800822082749I), Aug 22, 1980: Piper PA28180 (N7780N), St Thomas, ND, Minor damage. Brakes inoperative after landing. Hydraulic reservoir was empty, brakes had just been replaced.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
