## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AIRMAN WAS CONDUCTING STOP AND GO'S AT THE GOOSE BAY AIRPORT, ALASKA. PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN BEFORE THE ACCIDENT, THE AIRMAN BEGAN REDUCING POWER AT APPROXIMATELY 5 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND. AT APPROXIMATELY 2-3 FEET OFF THE GROUND, THE AIRMAN NOTICED A FASTER THAN NORMAL RATE OF DESCENT, AND ADDED A SLIGHT AMOUNT OF ADDITIONAL POWER IN AN ATTEMPT TO SLOW THE DESCENT RATE. THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN SHORTLY THEREAFTER. THE TOUCHDOWN WAS DESCRIBED AS ABOUT AS HARD AS JUMPING OFF THE BACK OF A TRUCK'S TAILGATE AND LANDING ON THE GROUND. THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN IN A THREE-POINT ATTITUDE, AND THE AIRMAN IMMEDIATELY NOTICED A SOUND SIMILAR TO THAT OF A FIRECRACKER. THIS SOUND WAS THE RIGHT GEAR LEG BREAKING AT THE POINT IN WHICH THE WHEEL AXLE CONNECTS. THE AIRCRAFT IMMEDIATELY TURNED APPROXIMATELY 30 DEGREES TO THE RIGHT, AND CAME TO A REST ON ITS LEFT WING TIP AND PROPELLER.

THE AIRMAN DESCRIBED THE WEATHER AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT AS CALM WINDS WITH CLEAR SKIES. THERE WERE NO MECHANICAL IRREGULARITIES WITH THE AIRCRAFT PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT.

THE NTSB REPRESENTATIVE ASSIGNED TO THIS ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION HAS SENT THE LANDING GEAR LEG THAT BROKE TO THEIR ANALYSIS OFFICE IN WASHINGTON D.C., TO DETERMINE IF THE MECHANICAL FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY A MECHANICAL IRREGULARITY OR PILOT INDUCED OVERLOAD. THIS REPORT WILL BE UPDATED ONCE THIS INFORMATION IS RECEIVED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC13LA049](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC13LA049), May 19, 2013: Maule M-6-235 (N56464), Big Lake, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s execution of a hard landing, which resulted in the overstress fracture of the right main axle housing and the subsequent nosedown.

## Other reports on N56464 (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19901014055739I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19901014055739I), Oct 14, 1990: Maule M6235 (N56464), Anchorage, AK, Minor damage. Pilot landed on a snow covered field and nosed over on rollout.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
