## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JUNE 1, 2013, AT APPROXIMATELY 0940 LOCAL TIME THE PILOT DEPARTED EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, MO (KGPH) WITH A PLANNED DESTINATION OF JUNCTION CITY, KS (3JC). THE PILOT MADE A PRECAUTIONARY OFF AIRPORT LANDING ON A ROAD AT 1140 LOCAL TIME APPROXIMATELY 90 NAUTICAL MILES FROM HIS DEPARTURE ALONG HIS PLANNED ROUTE OF FLIGHT. DURING THE LANDING ROLL THE RIGHT WING TIP STRUCK A FENCE POST TEARING THE FABRIC. HE SAID THE ROAD LOWERED COMPARED TO THE SURROUNDING TERRAIN.

THE PILOT REPORTED PLANNING OF THE 125 NAUTICAL MILE FLIGHT INCLUDED ALTERNATE FUEL STOPS IN LAWRENCE, KS (KLWC) OR WAMEGO, KS (69K), IF REQUIRED. THE AIRCRAFT A PIPER J-3 CUB HAS A 10.8 U.S. GALLON FUEL TANK AND A NORMAL FUEL BURN AND CRUISE SPEED OF 4 GALLONS PER HOUR AND 75 NAUTICAL MILES PER HOUR, RESPECTIVELY.

THE PILOT STATED THAT WINDS WERE CALCULATED AS FORECAST UNTIL REACHING THE TOPEKA VICINITY AND THEN INCREASED SUBSTANTIALLY SUBSEQUENTLY. FUEL BURN APPEARED TO BE GREATER THAN PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED WHEN OPERATING THIS AIRCRAFT. UPON APPROACHING THE AREA OF LANDING THE PILOT CALCULATED THAT HIS GROUND SPEED WAS LESS AND FUEL RESERVES WERE NOT AS PLANNED AND LANDED ON THE ROAD AS A PRECAUTION.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
