## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JULY 6, 2013 AT 1845 EDT, A MINI-MAX JDT1600R, AN UNREGISTERED EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED AFTER DEPARTING 50G RUNWAY 36. THE AIRCRAFT WAS OPERATED BY AN NON-CERTIFICATED AIRMAN. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS WERE PRESENT AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT.

WITNESSES REPORTED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS UNUSUALLY LOW AS IT CLIMBED AFTER DEPARTURE. THE ENGINE WAS REPORTED TO BE RUNNING LOUD AS IF IT HAD NO MUFFLER AND BLACK SMOKE WAS SEEN EMANATING FROM THE ENGINE PRIOR TO DESCENT. THE WITNESS REPORTED A SOUND SIMILAR TO A SURGE OF POWER PRIOR TO OBSERVING THE AIRCRAFT PITCH UP FOLLOWED BY ONE AND ONE HALF ROTATIONS TO THE LEFT (AERODYNAMIC SPIN) PRIOR TO IMPACT. FIRE CONSUMED THE AIRCRAFT ON IMPACT.

A MAJORITY OF THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE. THE PROPELLER WAS DAMAGED IN THE CRASH BUT DID NOT EXHIBIT DAMAGE CONSITENT WITH HIGH RPM. THE GEARBOX WAS INTACT, BUT THE PROPELLER SHAFT SPUN FREELY EVEN THOUGH THE ENGINE WAS SEIZED. OPENING THE GEAR BOX REVEALED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE GEARS CONSISTENT WITH WEAR OVERTIME. THE CASE CONTAINED BOTH FINE POWDER AND BEARING CAGE REMNANTS.

## NTSB investigation

None matched to this report by aircraft and date. Search the NTSB's own records: https://data.ntsb.gov/carol-main-public/basic-search

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
