## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, HE DEPARTED FROM KODIAK MUNICIPAL AIRPORT WITH ONE PASSENGER ON BOARD. HE WAS IN A SLOW CRUISE/CLIMB HEADING NORTHBOUND. HE MADE ONE RIGHT HAND TURN IN A CIRCLE ON THE WAY TO DEMONSTRATE THE AIRPLANE'S HANDLING. THE ENGINE LOST POWER BRIEFLY, THE PILOT IMMEDIATELY PUT THE CARB HEAT ON AND THE ENGINE CAME BACK TO NORMAL POWER. HE THEN TURNED BACK TOWARDS THE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT TO TRY TO LAND AT THE AIRPORT. HE TURNED THE CARB HEAT OFF AND THEN BACK ON AGAIN AND THE ENGINE POWER WENT TO IDLE. THE POWER NEVER RESUMED AND I SET THE PLANE UP FOR BEST GLIDE SPEED. HE TRIED TO REGAIN POWER BY CHECKING FUEL, CARB HEAT AGAIN, MIXTURE, ADJUSTING POWER, BUT IT DIDN'T WORK. NO SUITABLE LANDING SITES APPEARED TO BE WITHIN GLIDING DISTANCE SO WE DESCENDED ONTO THE WATER PARALLEL TO THE SHORELINE. THE AIRPLANE SKIMMED THE WATER 100 YARDS BEFORE FLIPPING OVER ONTO ITS BACK. THE PASSENGER AND HE EXITED THE AIRPLANE, SWAM TO SHORE AND WALKED TO THE FT. ABERCROMBIE RANGER STATION TO CALL FOR HELP. A FEW MINUTES AFTER, EMS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL SHOWED UP.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC13CA062](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC13CA062), Jul 6, 2013: Aeronca 11AC (N9118E), Kodiak, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The loss of engine power due to carburetor icing and the pilot's failure to continue the use of carburetor heat after experiencing carburetor ice.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
