## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JULY 29, 2013, AT ABOUT 0950 PACIFIC DAYLIGHT TIME, A LIGHT SPORT WEIGHT-SHIFT-CONTROL AIRCRAFT, N123FJ, CRASHED AT RED BLUFF MUNICIPAL AIRPORT (RBL) IN RED BLUFF, CA. THE CERTIFICATED PRIVATE PILOT/OWNER, WHO WAS THE SOLE OCCUPANT, SUSTAINED FATAL INJURIES ON IMPACT. THE WRECKAGE FROM THE DESTROYED AIRCRAFT WAS WITHIN A RADIUS OF APPROXIMATELY 500 FEET.

THE PERSONAL FLIGHT WAS CONDUCTED IN DAY VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS (VMC), AND WAS DESTINED FOR CHICO MUNICIPAL AIRPORT (CIC) IN CHICO, CA.

ACCORDING TO WITNESSES, AFTER DEPARTURE, THE AIRCRAFT CLIMBED TO ABOUT 75 FEET ABOVE GROUND LEVEL BEFORE IT MADE A SHARP TURN TO THE WEST AND IMPACTED THE GROUND IN A STEEP NOSE-DOWN ATTITUDE AT A HIGH RATE OF DESCENT. WITNESS STATEMENTS INDICATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT MAY HAVE STALLED SHORTLY AFTER DEPARTURE.

NO PRE-IMPACT ANOMALIES WERE REPORTED.

THIS REPORT MAY BE AMENDED PENDING FURTHER EVIDENCE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR13LA347](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR13LA347), Jul 29, 2013: Airborne Windsports PTY Edge XT-912-L (N123FJ), Red Bluff, CA, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to properly secure himself in the cockpit with the seat belt, which resulted in his inability to control the airplane after takeoff.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
