## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

A HELICOPTER RATED PRIVATE PILOT WITH 185 FLIGHT HOURS WAS FLYING A SINGLE ENGINE LAND AIRPLANE UNDER SOLO PRIVILEGES WITH 14 HOURS OF EXPERIENCE. HE BECAME DISORIENTED AND, RUNNING LOW ON FUEL, ELECTED TO MAKE A PRECAUTIONARY LANDING. THE PILOT SELECTED A DIRT ROAD BUT THERE WAS A TAILWIND CONDITION PRESENT. DURING THE ROLL OUT THE AIRCRAFT BOGGED DOWN IN SOFT SAND AND THE TAILWIND PREVENTED THE PILOT FROM MAINTAINING DIRECTIONAL CONTROL. HE SWERVED INTO AN EMBANKMENT CAUSING STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO BOTH WINGS OF THE AIRPLANE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN13CA485](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN13CA485), Aug 4, 2013: Cessna 150D (N4281U), Hermleigh, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's improper positional awareness, which resulted in an off airport landing and impact with terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
