## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON AUGUST 14, 2013 I MET THE OWNER OF N8222K AT APPROXIMATELY 0900 AND WE DROVE TO THE SITE OF THE ACCIDENT, LOCATED IN A MILO FIELD NORTH EAST OF EAGLE LAKE AIRPORT ( ELA). THE AIRCRAFT WAS IN THE NORTH WEST CORNER OF THE FIELD AND THE RUTS IN THE FIELD INDICATED THE AIRCRAFT HAD ATTEMPTED TO LAND SOUTHEAST TO NORTHWEST. ON THE NORTH BOUNDARY OF THE FIELD IS AN IRRIGATION DITCH THAT IS ABOUT SIX (6) FEET DEEP AND TEN (10) FEET WIDE.

THE AIRCRAFT WAS UPRIGHT AND THE HEADING WAS IN AN EASTERLY DIRECTION. THE OWNER STATED THE PILOT TOLD HIM HE HAD TRIED TO GROUND LOOP THE AIRCRAFT TO AVOID GOING INTO THE DITCH.

THE LEFT MAIN GEAR WAS BURIED UNDER THE FUSELAGE. THE RIGHT MAIN WAS VISIBLE, THOUGH IT APPEARED TO BE DISPLACED IN AN UPWARD DIRECTION AT THE BASE OF THE STRUT MOUNT. THE TOP FUSELAGE WING STRUTS HAD COLLAPSED, CAUSING THE UPPER WING TO COME TO REST ATOP THE FUSELAGE. THE LOWER WING WAS DAMAGED AT THE LEFT WING TIP AND THE RIGHT WING ROOT. THE FUSELAGE HAD ROLLED 10 DEGREES TO THE LEFT FROM THE IMPACT. THERE WAS NO FIRE INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENT.

THE NUMBER 1 CYLINDER FAILED ON THE PRATT AND WHITNEY R-1340 ENGINE. THE CYLINDER DEVELOPED A HOLE NEAR THE SPARK PLUG AND A CRACK RUNNING AROUND THE CYLINDER PARALLEL WITH THE COOLING FINS ON THE CYLINDER HEAD.
