## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE STUDENT PILOT WAS ON A LOCAL SOLO FLIGHT FROM SKY SOARING AIRPORT. HE WAS TOWED TO 4000 FEET ABOVE GROUND LEVEL WHERE HE RELEASED FROM THE TOWPLANE. AFTER PRACTICING SOME MANEUVERS, HE ENCOUNTERED SINKING AIR, AND RETURNED TO THE AIRPORT FOR LANDING. HE WAS TOO LOW TO MAKE A NORMAL PATTERN FOR LANDING. HE ATTEMPTED TO GO DIRECTLY TO RUNWAY 9, BUT HE WAS TOO LOW TO AVOID POWER LINES. HE LANDED IN A NEARBY FIELD, BUT ON TOUCHDOWN THE RIGHT WING STRUCK A SMALL TREE. THE GLIDER SUSTAINED DAMAGE TO THE WING LEADING EDGE AND THE AFT WING SPAR.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN13CA573](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN13CA573), Sep 2, 2013: Schweizer SGS 2 33A (N2668H), Hampshire, IL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's inadequate compensation for landing area conditions during an off-airport landing which resulted in a collision with an obstruction.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
