## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

STUDENT PILOT TURNED BASE TO FINAL BUT PUT SPOILERS IN TOO FAR, AIRCRAFT WENT INTO A TURBULENT LAYER OF WIND COMING OFF THE HILLS, LOST AIRSPEED, THE CFI THIRKILL TOOK OVER, RETRACTED THE SPOILERS AND TRIED TO GET MORE LIFT. THERE WASN'T ENOUGH ROOM LEFT AND THE GLIDER HIT SAGEBRUSH AND CRASH LANDED PRIOR TO THE RUNWAY. STUDENT STATED THAT HE PULLED SPOILERS OUT ALL THE WAY INSTEAD OF ADJUSTING THEM IN. STUDENT STATED THAT HE KIND OF PANICKED WHEN DOWNDRAFT HIT THEM. THIS PROCESS KILLED THE LIFT THEY HAD AND DROVE THEM DOWN TOO LOW TO RECOVER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR13CA418](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR13CA418), Sep 21, 2013: Grob G 103 Twin II (N54554), Morgan, UT, substantial damage. Probable cause: An incorrect descent rate while on final approach as a result of the flight instructor's delayed remedial action, which lead to an off-field landing and impact with terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
