ON OCTOBER 21, 2013, AT APPROXIMATELY 1907 LOCAL TIME, THE FLIGHT CREW OF FLIGHT 1770 WAS AT AN ATLITUDE OF 8,000FT. WHEN SUDDENLY BOTH PILOTS HEARD A LOUD BANG, FOLLOWED BY GRINDING NOISE, THEN FLASHES OF LIGHT EMMITING FROM THE EXHAUST PIPE WERE SEEN BY THE SECOND IN COMMAND. BOTH PILOTS OBSERVED THE NG DROP TO ZERO. THE PILOT IN COMMAND, COMMANDED THE SECOND IN COMMAND TO PITCH FOR PROPER GLIDE SPEED AND PROCEED DIRECT TO MAUI. THE PIC NOTIFIED ATC OF THE EMERGENCY, COMPLETED THE ENGINE FAILURE CHECKLIST, AND SECURED THE ENGINE.

THE CREW SEARCHED FOR A PROPER LANDING SPOT. ONCE THE SPOT WAS CHOSEN, AT 2,500 FT. THE PIC TOOK OVER THE CONTROLS. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED ON PIILANI HIGHWAY, STRUCK TWO STREET SIGNS AND CAME TO A STOP. THE CREW INITIATED AN EVACUATION. NO INJURIES REPORTED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR14FA024](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR14FA024), Oct 22, 2013: Cessna 208 (N861MA), Wailea, HI, substantial damage.
