## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

WHILE CLIMBING OUT ON THE DOWNWIND LEG OF RUNWAY 30, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO SURGE. THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT IMMEDIATELY LOWERED THE COLLECTIVE, ROLLED THE THROTTLE TO THE IDLE POSITION AND ENTERED AN AUTOROTATION FOR LANDING. ON LANDING, THE LEFT SKID CAUGHT IN THE SOFT SOIL AND ROTATED THE HELICOPTER COUNTERCLOCKWISE APPROXIMATELY 180 DEGREES. DURING THE LANDING AND ROTATION, THE MAIN ROTOR STRUCK THE TAIL BOOM CAUSING IT TO SEPARATE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN14TA020](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN14TA020), Oct 26, 2013: Bell OH-58A (N283MP), Jefferson City, MO, substantial damage. Probable cause: The loss of engine power for reasons that could not be determined because postaccident examinations of the engine did not reveal any anomalies that would have precluded normal operation.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
