## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 11-3-2013 THE AIRMAN WAS PILOTING ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ CESSNA 180 (N3148C) ON A FLIGHT FROM DALHART,TX TO SAINT JOHNS, AZ WHEN THE ENGINE QUIT DURING FINAL APPROACH TO THE AIRPORT. AIRMAN LANDED 1 MILE SHORT OF THE RUNWAY AND THE EMERGENCY LANDING IN THE DESERT CAUSED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT. AIRMAN WAS NOT INJURIED. THE AIRCRAFT RECOVERY PERSONNEL FROM AIR TRANSPORT NOTED ONLY 3-4 GALLONS OF FUEL IN THE L/H WING, THE R/H WING WAS EMPTY. AIRMAN STATED TO THE NTSB ON 11-3-2013 DURING A TELEPHONE CALL THAT HE MUST OF RAN OUT OF FUEL, BUT WASN'T SURE WHY SINCE HE HAD DONE THIS FLIGHT NUMEROUS TIMES. AIRMAN STATED HE HAD PERSONALLY TOPPED OFF THE FUEL TANK IN DALHART, TX TO IT'S 60 GALLON CAPACITY. AIRMAN STATED THAT HE HAD EXPERIENCED HEADWINDS MOST OF THE TRIP AND THAT POSSIBLY CONTRIBUTED TO THE EXTRA FUEL BURN.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR14LA042](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR14LA042), Nov 3, 2013: Cessna 180 (N3148C), St. Johns, AZ, substantial damage. Probable cause: A total loss of engine power while on final approach due to fuel exhaustion, which resulted from the pilot’s improper preflight fuel planning.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
