## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 11/27/2013, AT APPROXIMATELY 1245 MST, AIRCRAFT N3786A, AN EXPERIMENTAL HOME-BUILT SMYTHE SIDEWINDER, EXPERIENCED AN IN-FLIGHT BREAKUP. THE FUSELAGE IMPACTED THE GROUND APPROXIMATELY 1/4 MILE BEYOND THE INITIAL BREAK-UP LOCATION. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED AND THE SOLE OCCUPANT WAS FATALLY INJURED. THE WEATHER AT THE TIME WAS VMC WITH VERY LIGHT WINDS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN14FA072](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN14FA072), Nov 27, 2013: Biesemeier David I Smyth Sidewinder (N3786A), Boulder, CO, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot’s abrupt maneuver, which exceeded the structural limits of the left wing and resulted in its in-flight separation.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
