## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ACCIDENT STUDENT PILOT HAD BEEN PRACTICING WATER LANDINGS WITH CFI ALL DAY. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 5 HOURS OF FLYING, TAKE OFFS AND LANDINGS IN ACCIDENT AIRCRAFT, STUDENT AND CFI LANDED AT HII. CFI EXITED THE AIRCRAFT AND DPE BOARDED FOR THE EXAMINATION. AIRCRAFT TOOK OFF FROM HII AND TURNED TOWARD LAKE HAVASU. STUDENT PILOT INITIATED LANDING PROCEDURE AND LANDED THE AIRCRAFT IN THE WATER WITH THE LANDING GEAR EXTENDED. WHEN THE LANDING GEAR HIT THE WATER, THE AIRCRAFT FLIPPED OVER ON ITS BACK. AIRCRAFT WINDSHIELD WAS DESTROYED AND THE AIRCRAFT IMMEDIATELY FILLED WITH WATER. STUDENT AND DPE WERE ABLE TO EXIT THE AIRCRAFT WITH ONLY MINOR INJURIES. THE AIRCRAFT WAS TOWED TO SHORE AND PLACED ON SHORE UPRIGHT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR14CA093](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR14CA093), Jan 10, 2014: Maule M 7-235 (N6136T), Lake Havasu, AZ, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilots' failure to verify the landing gear position prior to the water landing and the pilot/examiner's failure to adequately monitor the pilot.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
