## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON SUNDAY MARCH 23, 2014, ALBERT WHITTED AIRPORT, OPERATING OFF OF RUNWAY 18/36 BECAUSE THE MAIN RUNWAY, WHICH FAVORS THE PREVAILING WINDS 90% OF THE TIME, WAS CLOSED SO THAT THE GRAND PRIX RACE COULD USE IT FOR THE FINISH LINE. THE WINDS WERE FROM THE WEST, SOUTHWEST@ 12 KNOTS AND GUSTING. FIRST TWO FLIGHTS WERE WITHOUT A PROBLEM. ABOUT NOON DEPARTED FOR A 20 MIN FLIGHT. THE SEA BREEZE USUALLY DOES NOT KICK IN UNTIL ABOUT 3 OR 4 IN THE AFTERNOON, HOWEVER, ON THE WAY BACK TO THE AIRPORT THE TOWER WAS REPORTING THE WIND FROM THE WEST AT 12 KNOTS GUSTING. AIRCRAFT LANDED ON THE NUMBERS. ABOUT HALFWAY FROM TOUCHDOWN TO RAMP CHARLIE, A WIND GUST PICKED UP THE RIGHT WING AND THE LEFT WING MADE CONTACT WITH THE GROUND. DID NOT STOP ON THE RUNWAY AND TURNED OFF ON RAMP CHARLIE AND TAXIED TO THE HANGAR. AS A RESULT, THE MAIN SPAR IN THE LOWER WING BROKE AND THE WOOD BOW AND 1 RIB NEEDS TO BE REPLACED IN THE TOP WING.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA14CA166](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA14CA166), Mar 23, 2014: Waco UIC (N13562), Saint Petersburg, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate compensation for the wind conditions during landing.

## Other reports on N13562 (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19920404008699A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920404008699A), Apr 4, 1992: Waco U1C (N13562), St Petersburg, FL, Substantial damage. Nosed over on landing. Blamed windshift to tailwind on landing roll and tower failed to advise or change runway.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
