## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

N777LR DEPARTED D73 FOR A LOCAL CROSS COUNTRY COMPETITION. GLIDER LOST ALTITUDE AND ATTEMPTED AN OFF AIRPORT LANDING IN A FIELD (3.2 NM ON 123 DEG RADIAL FROM THE AIRPORT). ON FINAL APPROACH, THE GLIDER CLIPPED THE TOP OF TREES, TEARING OFF APPROXIMATELY 1/3 OF THE RIGHT WING AND UPON IMPACT BROKE OFF THE TAIL, CLASPED THE LANDING GEAR, AND FRACTURED THAT EMPANAGE BEHIND THE COCKPIT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA14CA220](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA14CA220), May 4, 2014: Schleicher ASW 20 (N777LR), Monroe, GA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's improper selection of an off-airport landing site and his subsequent failure to maintain clearance from trees during an off airport landing.

## Other reports on N777LR (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19920527037469I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920527037469I), May 27, 1992: Schler ASW20 (N777LR), Julian, PA, Minor damage. Ridge wind stopped on glider crosscountry. Airspeed too slow. Landed in plowed field. Ground looped.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
