## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE CFI AND STUDENT PILOT REPORTED THAT AN ENGINE FIRE OCCURRED WHILE THE CFI WAS ATTEMPTING TO RESTART THE ENGINE SO THE STUDENT COULD PERFORM HIS SECOND SUPERVISED SOLO FLIGHT.

THE CFI REPORTED THE FOLLOWING DETAILS: HE INITIALLY EXITED THE AIRCRAFT ON THE RAMP AFTER A DUAL-INSTRUCTIONAL FLIGHT. THE STUDENT THEN ATTEMPTED THREE HOT START PROCEDURES, BUT THE ENGINE DID NOT START. AFTER THOSE ATTEMPTS, THE CFI CHECKED THE COWLING FOR ANY INDICATION OF FUEL FLOODING AND DIDN?T OBSERVE ANY. HE GOT BACK IN THE AIRPLANE AND TRIED TO RESTART THE ENGINE HIMSELF. THE ENGINE FAILED TO START AND SMOKE WAS SEEN COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE COWLING. THE CFI ADVISED THE STUDENT OF AN ENGINE FIRE AND PROCEEDED TO TURN EVERYTHING OFF. HE AND THE STUDENT THEN EXITED THE AIRCRAFT, AND HE INFORMED ATC OF THE FIRE VIA TELEPHONE. A FIRE TRUCK WAS ON SITE WITHIN 2 MINUTES AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
