## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

WHILE CRUISING AT 12,500 MSL THE ENGINE LOST POWER. THE PILOT FIRST NOTICED THE PROBLEM AS A SLIGHT CHANGE IN CADENCE FROM THE ENGINE ACCOMPANIED BY A VERY SLIGHT POP. WITHIN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, THE PILOT NOTICED A DROP IN EGT ON ALL CYLINDERS. THE PILOT DECLARED AN EMERGENCY AND LANDED ON A DIRT ROAD. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE DURING THE LANDING.

DURING RECOVERY, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT 32 GALLONS OF FUEL WAS AVAILABLE IN THE AIRCRAFT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR14LA208](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR14LA208), May 24, 2014: Cessna 182P (N21048), Mammoth Lakes, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The total loss of engine power due to carburetor icing, which resulted from the pilot’s failure to use carburetor heat in cruise flight while operating in an area conducive to carburetor icing.

## Other reports on N21048 (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19780810049429I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19780810049429I), Aug 10, 1978: Cessna 182 (N21048), San Diego, CA. Wing tip of taxiing aircraft struck rudder of parked aircraft.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
