## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

WHILE ON THE FIRST FLIGHT AND LANDING IN A SINGLE PLACE GLIDER, THE PILOT FLARED HIGHER THAN NORMAL, STALLED, LANDED HARD, AND SEVERED THE TAILBOOM. THE PILOT STATED THAT WHILE ON A TURN FROM BASE TO FINAL, REALIZED HE WAS TOO HIGH, AND MADE TWO 360 DEGREE TURNS. THE PILOT STATED THIS RESULTED IN A HIGHER ALTITUDE DUE TO THERMAL ACTIVITY. THE PILOT ENTERED INTO AN IMMEDIATE SLIP WITH SPOILERS. HE STATED THAT THE SLIP RESULTED IN A HEADING AND FLIGHT PATH TOWARD TALL TREES. THE PILOT THEN CORRECTED HEADING/ FLIGHT PATH, LOOSING SITUATIONAL AWARENESS OF AIRSPEED DUE TO WHAT THE PILOT STATED AS EXTREME MANEUVERING RESULTING IN TOO HIGH OF FLARE AND STALL.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR14CA219](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR14CA219), May 31, 2014: Pzl-Swidnik PW 5 (N77FZ), Enumclaw, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain control of the glider during the landing flare which resulted in a stall and hard landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
