## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT IN COMMAND OF N28718 ENTERED INSTRUMENT METERIOLOGICAL CONDITIONS IN HIS GRUMMAN AMERICAN AA-5B AIRPLANE. HE SUBSEQUENTLY LOST CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE AND CRASHED VERTICALLY INTO THE OCEAN JUST OFF SHORE FROM FLORENCE, OREGON. THE PILOT WAS KILLED, AND AUTHORITIES DID NOT RECOVER THE BODY OF HIS PASSENGER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR14FA244](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR14FA244), Jun 15, 2014: Grumman American Avn. AA 5B (N28718), Florence, OR, destroyed, 2 fatal. Probable cause: The noninstrument-rated pilot’s visual flight into instrument meteorological conditions, which resulted in his spatial disorientation and the subsequent loss of airplane control.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
