## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JUNE 22, 2014 PILOT DEPARTED AIRPORT FOR SHORT SCENIC FLIGHT. PILOT STATED THAT HE HAD INSTALLED A NEW FUEL TOTALIZER ON AIRCRAFT. PILOT STATED THAT HE NEVER CALIBRATED IT. PILOT STATED THAT HE ADDED FUEL SEVERAL FLIGHTS PREVIOUS AND ASSUMED HE HAD ENOUGH FUEL. PILOT VISUALLY OBSERVER FUEL IN TANKS PRIOR TO DEPARTURE BUT DIDN'T KNOW HOW MUCH AND ASSUMED TOTALIZER WAS CORRECT. PILOT HAD FUEL SELECTOR ON BOTH TANKS. PILOT FLEW AROUND THE AREA FOR 40 MINUTES BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO LAND. ON SHORT FINAL THE ENGINE QUIT. UPON EXAMINATION OF RIGHT TANK IT WAS DRY, LEFT TANK HAD FUEL. PILOT STATED HE HAD BOOST PUMP ON AND IS UNSURE WHY ONE RAN DRY. PILOT ALSO A&P MECHANIC AND HAD REBUILT THE AIRCRAFT. AIRCRAFT WILL BE EXAMINED BY FAA INSPECTOR ON JULY 25. THIS REPORT MAY BE AMENDED PENDING THE RESULTS OF THE INSPECTIONS. PROBABLY WILL RECLASSIFY TO ACCIDENT STATUS. AFTER CONSULTING WITH FAA INSPECTOR AND NTSB, INCIDENT HAS BEEN RECLASSIFIED AS AN ACCIDENT DUE TO EXTENSIVE FIREWALL DAMAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR14CA400](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR14CA400), Jun 22, 2014: Mazurek Keith P Zodiac 601XL (N599KM), Hurricane, UT, substantial damage. Probable cause: Loss of engine power due to fuel exhaustion. Contributing to the accident was an incorrectly calibrated fuel totalizer.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
