## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS CONDUCTING AN INSTRUCTIONAL FLIGHT WITH ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^. THE FLIGHT WAS PLANNED TO BE A 2 HOUR LESSON WITH LANDINGS AT JRF AND MANEUVERS IN THE SOUTH PRACTICE AREA ON THE ISLAND OF OAHU. FUEL ON BOARD WAS ESTIMATED TO BE 10 GALLONS A SIDE BY VISUALLY INSPECTING THE FUEL TANKS AND INSERTING ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ INDEX FINGER INTO THE FUEL TANKS. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ STATED THAT THE TIP OF HIS FINGER BARELY TOUCHED THE FUEL. THE AIRCRAFT HAS A BURN RATE OF 7-8 GALLONS AN HOUR. 1.7 HOURS INTO THE FLIGHT THE AIRCRAFT LOST POWER AND AN EMERGENCY OFF AIRPORT LANDING WAS MADE IN A FARM FIELD. THERE WERE NO INJURIES OR DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT. INSPECTOR ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ OF WP-13 ARRIVED AT THE SCENE AN HOUR AFTER THE LANDING AND INSPECTED THE FUEL TANKS AND FUEL STRAINERS. ALL WERE EMPTY. THE AIRCRAFT WAS INSPECTED BY AN A & P MECHANIC ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, WHO FOUND THE AIRPLANE TO BE AIRWORTHY. THE AIRPLANE WAS FLOWN OUT OF THE FIELD AND BACK TO HNL 2 DAYS LATER. THE CAUSE OF ENGINE FAILURE HAS BEEN DETERMINED TO BE FUEL EXHAUSTION DUE TO IMPROPER PREFLIGHT PLANNING.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
