## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

N5923P DEPARTED KEET ON AN IFR FLIGHT PLAN TO KMVC FOR THE PURPOSE OF FLIGHT TRAINING ON THE USE OF A NEWLY INSTALLED GARMIN 430 GPS. THE CFI, WHO WAS OCCUPYING THE RIGHT SEAT, WAS ACTING AS PILOT-IN-COMMAND SINCE THE AIRCRAFT OWNER/PRIVATE PILOT DID NOT HAVE A CURRENT FLIGHT REVIEW. IT IS UNCLEAR WHO WAS MANIPULATING THE CONTROLS. THE CFI CLAIMS TO HAVE CONDUCTED THREE TAKEOFFS AND LANDINGS TO GAIN CURRENCY IN THE AIRCRAFT PRIOR TO DEPARTING ON THE CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHT. AFTER COMPLETING THE KMVC RNAV 3 APPROACH, A MISSED APPROACH WAS INITIATED. DURING THE CLIMBOUT, AT APPROXIMATELY 400 FEET AGL, THE ENGINE SPUTTERED AND THEN QUIT. AFTER CONFIRMING THAT THE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP WAS ON, THE MIXTURE WAS RICH, AND THE MAGNETOS WERE ON BOTH, ONE OF THE PILOTS SWITCHED TO THE OTHER FUEL TANK. THESE ACTIONS DID NOT RESTORE POWER TO THE ENGINE. THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED APPROXIMATELY 1 NM EAST OF KMVC. JUST PRIOR TO IMPACT, WHILE IN A RIGHT BANK, THE AIRCRAFT'S LEFT WING STRUCK A TREE. THE AIRCRAFT ROLLED OVER TO THE LEFT AS IT CAME TO REST INVERTED OVER A ROADSIDE DITCH.

12 GALLONS OF FUEL WAS DRAINED FROM THE RIGHT TANK. THE FUEL SELECTOR WAS CONFIRMED TO BE ON THE RIGHT TANK. THE LEFT FUEL TANK WAS COMPROMISED WHEN THE WING WAS TORN FROM THE FUSELAGE AFTER IMPACTING THE TREE. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF FUEL ON THE GROUND OR NEAR THE LEFT FUEL TANK. A GARMIN 296 GPS RECEIVER WAS RECOVERED FROM THE AIRCRAFT AND RECORDED THE FLIGHT TIME FROM KEET TO KMVC AS 1.6 HOURS. AIRCRAFT FLIGHT MANUAL STATES THAT, AT 75% POWER, THE ENGINE BURNS APPROXIMATELY 14 GPH WHILE IN FLIGHT. ON SITE ENGINE EXAMINATION CONFIRMED CRANKSHAFT CONTINUITY, NORMAL SPARK PLUG OPERATION, THUMB COMPRESSION ON ALL CYLINDERS AND NORMAL MAGNETO OPERATION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA14LA325](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA14LA325), Jul 3, 2014: Piper PA 24-250 (N5923P), Monroeville, AL, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power for reasons that could not be determined because postaccident examination of the engine and fuel system revealed no anomalies.

Narrative: pilot stated that on approach they were distracted by having to switch from one radio to another due to problems. At the same time a change in type…

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
