As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 25 AUGUST, 2014, A CESSNA 140, N436DC WAS ATTEMPTING TO TAKEOFF ON RUNWAY 04 AT LURAY AIRPORT (LUA) WHEN A DEER CAME OUT ON TO THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT STEERED THE PLANE LEFT, BUT THE DEER STOPPED AND WENT TO THE LEFT. THE PLANE WENT OFF RUNWAY 04 TO THE LEFT, CAME DOWN A HILL INTO A DITCH AND HALFWAY BACK UP THE HILL BEFORE THE PLANE CAME TO A STOP. THE PILOT AND PASSENGER SUSTAINED NO INJURIES FROM THE ACCIDENT. THE PILOT CONTACTED THE AIRPORT MANAGER, WHO ADVISED HIM TO CALL THE FAA. THE FAA RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF THE ACCIDENT ON 26 AUGUST, 2014

WHILE ACCOMPLISHING AN INSPECTION OF THE ACCIDENT SITE ON 26 AUGUST, 2014, IT WAS OBSERVED THAT LURAY AIRPORT WAS NOT COMPLETELY FENCED IN, AND THE RIGHT WING TIP COULD BE SEEN FROM THE EAST SIDE OF RUNWAY 04. ADDITIONALLY, THERE WERE TWO SKID MARKS THAT WENT OFF THE RUNWAY TO THE LEFT INTO THE GRASS AND DOWN A DITCH WHERE THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO A STOP HALFWAY BACK UP THE DITCH.

WHILE ACCOMPLISHING AN INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT, IT WAS OBSERVED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS POSITIONED ON THE UP SIDE OF THE DITCH FACING WEST WITH THE LEFT WING TIP ON THE GROUND, THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR WAS COLLAPSED AND HAD PUNCHED THROUGH THE FUSELAGE INTO THE COCKPIT, THE PROPELLER WAS DAMAGED, THE WIND SCREEN WAS BROKEN, AND BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT WINGS HAD DENTS IN THE LEADING EDGE. THE PILOT, PASSENGER, AND AIRPORT MANAGER PROVIDED STATEMENTS TO THE FAA.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA14CA412](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA14CA412), Aug 25, 2014: Cessna 140 (N436DC), Luray, VA, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of control and subsequent runway excursion while attempting to avoid a collision with a deer on takeoff.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
