## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING PRACTICE FOR THE RENO AIR RACES, AT AN ESTIMATED 385 MPH, APPROXIMATELY TWO FEET OF THE OUTBOARD RIGHT WING SEPARATED FROM THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT ENTERED AN UNCOMMANDED ROLL TO THE RIGHT, FOLLOWED BY DISINTEGRATION OF THE EMPENNAGE AND IMPACT WITH THE TERRAIN. THE PILOT WAS FATALLY INJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR14FA369](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR14FA369), Sep 8, 2014: Backovich George C G P 5 (N501GP), Reno, NV, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The failure of the right wing under normal race loads due to an improper repair of the right wing spar that reduced its structural strength following a previous landing accident.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
